Fifth Grade Curriculum:

The fifth grade year is filled with exciting new experiences in all aspects of the curriculum.

Our religion curriculum focus is on the sacraments. We examine the connection between Baptism and Confirmation. We actively engage in Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy throughout the year.

Our reading program explores a variety of literature forms, which encompasses both a basal reader and many interesting trade books. The topics cover numerous themes and genres from historical fiction, biographies, informational, realistic and nonfiction, as well as mystery. Writing is a central focus in fifth grade, and is used across the curriculum. Incorporated into the writing program is formal Process Writing, and use of the Six Traits of writing. Language and grammar skills are also part of the writing process.

Math covers a wide spectrum of skills. The math program incorporates use of basic skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, decimals and fractions to extend the bridge of higher level operations. Included in the math program are strategies for solving problems containing decimals, data, graphs, fractions number theory, measurements, percents, geometry, area, volume, as well as some pre algebra.

The science program includes life science, physical science and earth science. The program uses text and non text material as well as hands on activities, which are both teacher and student generated.

The central social studies focus in fifth grade is the “road to the Revolutionary War”. Students start with an exploration of map skills. From there we examine colonial life and regions as well as conflicts and resolutions in our nation’s history leading up to the Revolutionary War. We also proceed on to government branches and westward expansion.

The fifth grade also enjoys a 40 minute period each week called Enrichment. This time is designed to include an activity that extends the curriculum. In the past it has included Native American dance, educational videos, holiday generated art projects, puzzles, brain teasers, riddles and games. Overall the fifth grade is very active, and on their way to preparing for middle school.
